Whether you're a new pool owner or a backyard pro, pool safety should be your top priority every summer. Across Canada, municipalities enforce safety bylaws that aim to reduce accidents and protect families—but beyond compliance, there's a lot you can do to make your outdoor space safer, smarter, and more enjoyable.

Here are 7 tips to keep your pool area safe and stress-free this season:

1. Fence It In

Most municipalities in Canada require pool fencing at least 1.2 m (4 ft) high, with self-closing, self-latching gates. Make sure your fence is non-climbable and check local bylaws for specific details.

2. Ditch the Climbable Objects

Remove furniture, flower pots, or ladders near the fence line. Kids can easily use them to climb over and get into the pool area unsupervised.

3. Add Layers of Protection

Install a pool alarm that sounds when someone enters the water unexpectedly. You can also use gate alarms or motion sensors to get notified when someone enters the area.

4. Keep Safety Gear Handy

Always have a life ring, or rescue pole close by. Keep a first aid kit stocked and ready.

5. Encourage Water Smart Habits

Enroll children in swim classes and set clear pool rules: no diving in shallow areas, no running, and always swim with a buddy and an adult in the area.

6. Use Pool Covers When Not in Use

A solid pool cover not only keeps your water clean but also adds a barrier of safety when the pool is not in use.

7. Landscape With Safety in Mind

Choose non-slip surfaces for decking and patios and ensure adequate lighting for nighttime use. Precast concrete slabs from our sister company Rinox Inc are a great option for non-slip surfaces poolside. Store chemicals in a locked, well-ventilated space.
